In Gamblers Anonymous (GA), a step meeting is a meeting format where members focus on working through the Twelve Steps - the program’s core spiritual and recovery framework.

Here’s what usually happens in a GA step meeting:

Step-focused Discussion: The meeting is dedicated to one specific step (e.g., Step 1: “We admitted we were powerless over gambling…”).

Reading the Step: Members often read the step aloud from the GA-approved literature.

Personal Sharing: Participants talk about their experiences, challenges, and progress related to that step.

Rotating Steps: Some groups go through all twelve steps in order (e.g., one step per week or month). Others may repeat steps members are currently working on.

Guidance for Newcomers: Step meetings help new members understand how each step works and how it applies to their own recovery.

Spiritual and Practical Insight: Members share not just their gambling experiences, but also how applying the step has affected other areas of life (in positive ways).

The main difference from a general GA meeting is that instead of open sharing on any recovery topic, the conversation stays anchored to the chosen step.

The Gamblers Anonymous "Working the Steps" booklet is a guide designed to help individuals recover from a gambling addiction by following the Twelve Step Recovery Program. It provides explanations, questions, and exercises for each of the steps, encouraging members to engage in self-reflection, acknowledge their past actions, and make amends. The booklet is a tool for personal and spiritual growth, intended to be used with the GA fellowship (and support of a sponsor) to find a new way of life free from compulsive gambling.
